Dr. Donald Klingen is the Chief Medical Information Officer and a Senior Vice President for Main Line Health. He is responsible for the enterprise application division of the Information Services department as well as the Clinical informatics department. Dr. Klingen is dual board certified in Family Medicine and Clinical Informatics and continues to see patients on an ongoing basis.
Dr. Klingen has been working with Main Line Health for the past nine years and was the lead physician responsible for Main Line Health’s big bang launch of Epic across all service lines and locations in 2018. As part of the Epic launch, Dr. Klingen created the clinical informatics department at Main Line health as well as a Physician staffed Informatics team. More recently, Dr. Klingen served as the interim Chief Information Officer and coordinated Main Line Health Information Services department response and system support to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Klingen’s interest in clinical informatics and the application of technology to clinical care started from his residency training where he pursued a fellowship in faculty development and clinical informatics. An “applied clinical informatics” proponent he works with physicians, operational leadership and technology teams to help people provide safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable patient centered care.
Dr. Klingen was first introduced to Southeastern PA HSX in his work with our integration team as we sought to leverage HSX’s community connections to share core clinical information via CCD. We also piloted the use of expanded patient histories in the emergency department as well took advantage of HSX’s encounter notification tools to facilitate our care managers insight into where our patients were receiving care. Patients are increasingly mobile and the need to collaborate, share and track information between entities (acute hospital, outpatient office, skilled nursing facility or insurer) through groups like SEPA HSX is essential.
