Large regional healthcare systems have a duty to help improve our nation’s return on investment in health.  Lots of room remains for us to realize a better more-efficient system.  Our industry is indeed changing, and it will require expanding the envelope that has constrained clinical data transfer in the past.

My experience in healthcare consulting and now provider-side delivery of services leaves me no doubt that sharing of patient data across networks and practices is one of the next essential steps.  By setting up a uniquely enhanced exchange such as HealthShare Exchange of Southeastern PA, we finally have our hands on one of the advancements we’ve long looked for.  Support of and participation in a robust HIE has to stand as one of the great objectives for a healthcare organization today.  These exchanges aren’t just the latest trend or one that we will lose focus on as the next thing comes along but instead are a de-facto part of the future and the answer to a long-term need.
